life has thrown me yet a few dozen more curveballs lately, but then whose hasn't?! Am I right? The big question is... am I gonna ground out? Or will I knock it out of the park? Given past history, maybe someplace in between... Stay tuned, film at eleven...
On Mother's Day??
I've finally gotten some time to sit down & write about this. (it has been a crazy week) And I'm hoping that you got to do what I got to do..
I got to spend the day w/ my mom, who is the most amazing lady ever. (don't we all think that? well, actually no... if your mom was Joan Crawford) Toward the end of February I lost my Dad after a long battle w/ Alzheimers, but she lost her everything - they had been together for 65 years - 62 married; and she is struggling with how to BE without the love of her life, her beloved partner, her boyfriend. Some members of the family have been, for lack of a better word, jackasses to her, and she's struggling w/ that too. Fortunately she has some amazing caring neighbors, and between them & the rest of us we keep an eye on her - on Mother's Day, it was my turn.
I made her favorite Pink Lemonade Cake, brought her a whole bunch of live flowers and we spent the day roaming about in the yard planting stuff, then had some cake.
It was a terrific day in the company of a terrific lady. I'm so glad to have her for my mom, wouldn't trade her for anything. I hope you got to spend the day w/ your mom - cherish her while you have her - if there are any bumps in your relationship, get over it. You don't get your mom for life, just hers.
I think I should save this space back here for mental musings.. and boy oh boy am I musing today.
Today I'm having phone thoughts. I guess I'm one of about twelve people in the US who doesn't have a cell phone. Must say, it doesn't bother me most of the time. People walking around staring at the tiny screens of their phones all day - ick. No thanks. But sometimes, other times, I wonder if I'm missing out. I can't take pictures at the drop of a hat, I have NO idea what an "ap" is (no doubt there's an ap for that, right?) and now my web hosting server is telling me that if I don't have a mobile site, I'm irrelevant. Hmm. I don't consider myself a Luddite, but ... am I?
Is a person without a phone in 2013 the rough equivalent of a person without a car in LA?
But here comes spring. And just between you & me, I think it means to stick around this time. (we might finally be done w/ snow for a few months, but I'm not saying that out loud!) Time to start thinking about summer farmer's markets, fresh berries, and naps in the sun... in that order? Or not!
I've been making a few batches of soap, restocking the tried & true recipes.. and there will be some new experimental batches in the next few weeks, like a cucumber soap and some others. This is my favorite part of making soap - one part experiment, one part inspiration, one part skin nourishing ingredients, one part pure alchemy... it is always a blast to see what comes out of the soap pot.
There will also be a continuation of my jihad against the white violets threatening to take over my teeny tiny garden space. A word of advice to anyone out there reading this - NEVER plant white violets unless you want them in every square inch of your yard.
I couldn't wait any longer. The house is reasonably warm-ish, staying in the 50's... so... lined the molds, measured out the oils and TAH DAH... New Soap is now in the molds. Because I only have two molds I could only make two batches, but that's ok. I'm pretty happy... there will soon be fresh Oatmeal Honey and fresh Lavender Vanilla. And I gotta tellya... the house smells fantastic.
It was nearly warm today, sunny at least, but the wind was sharp still. I will be so happy when I can stop using the woodstove, cuz I'm just about out of firewood. The weatherman is calling for a bit of a warm up, let's hope he's right!
This has been one stonkin' long COLD winter, and I have totally had it. I am way past ready for digging in the dirt, playing in the yard, even swatting at mosquitoes would be better than wearing twenty six layers, heavy clunky boots, hair mashing hats, and fumbly gloves. (remind me in June I said this... I'll have forgotten)
Just got an invite to a spring craft fest, as details develop I'll post more info. Yippee! Craft fairs are such a great excuse to hang out w/ fun like minded souls. Let's just hope for no snow in May.
Long time no post..Sorry to have been away for such a stretch.. life has been pretty hectic here in this little neck of the woods. Sadly there has not been much soap making going on - way too cold in the house. But there ARE lots of ideas percolating in my beady little brain, awaiting a break in the arctic air to bring them to the soap pot.
Beth has been having a hard time of it, has gone thru about a month of discomfort as the vet tried to diagnose a problem she was having with her mouth. It appears we've gotten to the bottom of it, and now she is just as obnoxious as she was years ago. Poor Rico had gotten all used to her sleeping, sprawling about all lethargic.. and now she chases after him with evil intent.
lots of family stuff going on too, but we'll all get thru it. God willing.
I'm rather late in saying so, but Happy New Year to you - wherever you are, whatever you do - have a great 2013~~
Here we are, the holidays are upon us... ready or not, here they come!
I have successfully navigated not one but two holiday craft fairs, one in late November, the other in early December. Wooly Bear soaps have been well received, and best of all, the new Smokey Lonesome "flavor" was a sell out both times! I had a great conversation w/ another soapmaker who was entirely enamoured w/ it.
y'know... even though the whole point of the craft fairs is really to SELL stuff (from a vendor view point) it is a whole lot of fun to meet, talk with and just plain be around all those other people. I love it, and I hope to do more fairs next year.. looks like I'm going to be stuck having weekends off if I keep that job, so I'll have two days a week to focus on Wooly Bear.
But really truly, what makes this the most wonderful time of the year for me is that I've got inventory to build up. Sales haven't been off the charts, but I do have some replenishing to do.. at least five batches! And if I haven't mentioned it before, I LOOOVE making soap. It is such fun, a wonder to me that everyone doesn't do it.
However you celebrate - making cookies, hanging wreaths, exchanging gifts, singing carols, whatever you do... I wish you a warm happy and healthy holiday season, from our little family to yours! Merry Always!
The big blustery Sandy blew thru, scared the living daylights out of everyone and here we are on the other side. We, the furry family & I, remain mainly unscathed - lost power for a while, got some scary big tree branches down in the yard and had a few tense moments.. but we are all fine. The collies hate the wind, but other than that, they're fine. And Rico has emerged from his hidey hole in the cellar. I still don't know where he hides, but he feels safer there.
But I know it was a LOT harder on those in other areas, and our hearts go out to you, we wish you a full & rapid recovery - although it is going to be a rough go for a lot of you. I hope that all is as well as it can be given the circumstances.
today we're going to make more soap - not the soap I WANT to make, because the order I placed three weeks ago STILL hasn't gotten here, but I'm going to try a few new things, see how that works out. I feel especially lucky to be able to play around doing what I love to do the day after one of the worst storms we've seen in a coon's age. Take care everyone...
the bubble bath is "so far so good" but I've got a bit more R&D to do before it is ready for Prime Time. My testers (aka human guinea pigs) are happy, but we have to see how shelf stable this mixture will be.
The craft fair that I did a few weeks ago went quite nicely, tried a new set up for the booth and that seemed pretty well received. However, I nearly killed myself w/ the setting up, dragging stuff in from the parking lot inside then the whole thing in reverse a day later. I was the absolutely last person there at the end of the day - then again, I'm pretty much the only fool I know doing this w/ no other people for help. I was super jealous of the lady next to me whose strapping husband was there to put up her displays, then he left until it was time to break everything down. Ah well, once upon a time... I might just have to invest in a hand truck, since Prince Charming is otherwise occupied!
I've been making soap for the past several days to get ready for the holiday fair season. Yesterday's batch was Smooth Almond so the whole house smells warmly nutty. Fantastic!
The other thing I've been working on has been new flavors of dog cookies... a few folks asked about them at the fair, so I've been noodling w/ some new recipes. I made "apple & peanut butter" yesterday, but ... my canine testers were entirely underwhelmed. If Bounce turns up her nose.... well, that speaks volumes. Back to the drawing board.. or in this case, the cutting board.
FYI.. you can now find me on Facebook - Wooly Bear Soaps, so stop in and say hi if you're in the neighborhood..
