<![CDATA[Welcome to Wooly Bear Soaps - Look Ma! I'm blogging!]]>Wed, 07 Mar 2018 14:10:14 -0800Weebly<![CDATA[long gone]]>Sat, 12 Nov 2016 14:01:00 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/long-goneHaven't been here for a while.. what can I say? This has been a long strange summer, and the next several years are shaping up to be awful too - God willing we'll come out on the other side.
In the meantime, there is soap making a plenty. It seems that I've been making patchouli batches, lavender batches and batches of Sweet Cheeks every other week. Glad you like them! Last weekend I made a fresh loaf of Smooth Almond, back by popular demand, and there's some Peppermint Swirl for the holidays. Even though I'm sort of a Scrooge person myself.
<![CDATA[I'm ba-aack!]]>Sat, 30 Jul 2016 18:09:56 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/im-ba-aackOh my goodness! I've been away far too long! It has most definitely been a very long year... with sadly too few ups and way too many downs. Fortunately the ups have been pretty terrific ones. The downs have been crappy, but we manage.]]><![CDATA[helluva year]]>Tue, 12 Jan 2016 00:31:01 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/helluva-yearwell.. it has been a while since I blogged. Sorry to have evaporated on y'all... but shortly after my post in July, I lost my brother Dan. He was only 56, but had been dealing with a barrage of ever worsening illnesses for close to two years. On one level, I should be happy he is no longer in pain, no longer has to deal w/ doctors, nurses, tests and needles... he is free of it. And on a deeper far more selfish level, I am furious he is gone.. I miss him fiercely with a palpable and sometimes all consuming grief. To say we were close doesn't even begin to describe our relationship. He finished my sentences. We shared so many inside jokes, just us, it wasn't funny. (except it WAS funny... y'know?)

It has been hardest on my Mum of course... but we've been able to lean on each other a lot. I'm lucky in that.

Rest assured, Wooly Bear has not been idle this whole time. The soap pot has churned out a few more new recipes, and filled up some back log of tried & true varieties. I tried making up some "tub teas" this fall but they didn't go over well at all. The lotions I've been churning out have done better, and I like them better too! Sugar scrubs and dead sea salt scrubs debuted as well, although I have yet to put them up on the "products" page. I'll get to it, promise.

So.. I hope that you all have had a wonderful holiday, a safe happy celebration w/ close friends, family and fur babies.. be seein' ya soon!

<![CDATA[Dear Mister...]]>Sun, 26 Jul 2015 12:12:02 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/dear-mister

Dear Mister,

you don't know me. You didn't stop at my booth at the Farmers Market Friday evening, but you & your girlfriend (so cute, holding hands!) strolled by. You were wearing a green T shirt, proudly sharing its message w/ the world. And as a person who lives in VT I applaud the sentiment.

I almost approached you, REALLY wanted to tell you... but sometimes my insistence on proper spelling and grammar is not so much appreciated. So.. like my mom always said "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing." I kept quiet and let you walk on by.

Keep calm, your in Vermont...there for the world to see, spattered across your chest. And - spelled wrong. Glaringly spelled wrong.

But hey... keep calm, you're in Vermont.

<![CDATA[The attention span of a fruit fly...]]>Sat, 18 Jul 2015 20:28:53 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/the-attention-span-of-a-fruit-flyPicture

because I do have the attention span of a fruit fly... I've whipped out a Lemon Yogurt soap, and a lovely pink peachy one in honor my Mum beating breast cancer, and a Sudsy Beer soap from a bottle of Shock Top that was left in my fridge (I never drink beer) And there are a host of other ideas buzzing around in my head.. not enough time in a day. Fortunate? Or unfortunate? Hmmmm

Today I made a rosemary mint soap, was hoping for a great green, but lye is a cruel teammate and turns nearly everything it touches some shade of brown.. we'll see. After the rosemary mint soap, I experimented w/ a host of luxury butters & oils, and scented it w/ pure spearmint EO plus some German Blue Chamomile EO.. going in to the mold it was a gorgeous minty green color. Fingers crossed it comes out that way!! I'll keep you posted!

<![CDATA[Do you know me?]]>Wed, 24 Jun 2015 20:35:01 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/do-you-know-mePicture

I call him Romeo, since he seems to be in love with sweet little Bounce, but that probably isn't his real name. He's just a tall lanky Golden that visits from time to time. His "owners" believe that dog care is just opening the front door in the morning and pretending for the rest of the day that they don't have a dog. Well... that's because *I* have their dog.. been hanging out in my front yard for the past 3 days! And as handsome as he is, he isn't my dog. And as much as I love dogs, I really don't want this one. He has lifted his leg on everything, stomped thru my garden and slobbered all over my erstwhile clean glass door.

Do you know this dog? Is he your dog? Would you please keep him home?

<![CDATA[Dear lady,]]>Sun, 14 Jun 2015 12:41:02 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/dear-ladyDear lady at the farmers market this weekend... you know who you are. The one who asked all kinds of questions, sniffed each and every bar of soap, touched them all and acted VERY interested. Explained to me how you were shopping for a gift for a friend w/ sensitive skin, wanted something for yourself too. You listened intently while I explained the benefits of handmade soap, how there is nothing in there that shouldn't be, how THIS soap right here is super for people w/ sensitive skin because of its mild unscented formulation. You bogarted the booth for a good twenty minutes, blocking other potential customers from having a look see. But.. hey, you were serious.

then you proclaimed that you were "just gonna pick up some Dial in the hand pump. I'll pass"

l apologize for making that yucky face at you. I couldn't help myself. Dial? Really? You KNOW that shit isn't soap, right? You have NO idea what's in it, do you? I have no idea what's in it, which is why I don't use it. You would really rather use a "soap" made by who knows who, who knows where, containing who knows what?! REALLY? All this soap in front of you, carefully made with my own two hands in my own little kitchen from thoughtfully and specifically selected skin care ingredients, and you're going to "pick up some Dial"?!!

So.. I'm sorry if you felt I was being rude. But you started it.

<![CDATA[wretched bear]]>Sun, 10 May 2015 02:04:40 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/wretched-bearPicture
I have a wretched bear in the neighborhood.. it might even be the same wretched bear that has been hanging around here for years. Last night Bounce & I were about to walk out the front door for our evening walk.. I flipped on the outside light and there were two beady brown eyes, staring back at me. The wretched bear was ON MY DECK RAIL, eye to eye w/ me!! we did NOT go for our walk, and I thanked God I have started taking in the last birdfeeder every evening before darkness falls..

It hung around in the yard for over an hour, finally deciding to grab my compost bucket and TAKE OFF W/ IT!! It was nothing but carrot & potato peelings, onion skins but he STOLE IT!

wretched bear.

<![CDATA[Hello Gorgeous!!]]>Wed, 08 Apr 2015 02:26:38 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/hello-gorgeousPicture
I finally Finally FINALLY spotted my first robin of the year on Easter Sunday. Yay! It has been a beastly winter in New England, but Mother Nature is backing down for a while. Here at headquarters there is still an awful lot of snow & ice, but the weatherman is predicting warm temps.

I have been making lots of soap, restocking some favorites and experimenting with new recipes. Yesterday a tomato soap came out of the molds... it is SO pretty! Over the past few months I constructed some additional new molds so production can ramp up a bit more. 2014 was a pretty good year for Wooly Bear, thanks to you all. Much appreciated! Hope spring is springing for you.

<![CDATA[another avian invasion!]]>Fri, 23 Jan 2015 01:38:49 GMThttp://woolybearsoaps.com/look-ma-im-blogging/another-avian-invasionPicture
Here come the redpolls!! I have been playing host to a BIG flock of redpolls, pretty little voracious critters. The turkeys haven't been back in a while, but there are too many other natives around for me to miss them too much.
